Anal Douches and Male Enemas

Anal douches and male enemas are wonderful tools that can help guys to feel more comfortable before and during anal play. Whether you are using one for solo play such as masturbating with a prostate massager or partnered play, these tools can help to keep you focusing on your pleasure rather than on what is happening inside your body.  No matter if you are a first-time anal explorer or a long time enthusiast needing a good cleaning after using a huge butt plug, using an anal enema to keep clean is a must if you want to play outback!

What are anal douches and anal enemas?

These are health and wellness devices that forcibly insert water into the body to remove any fecal matter or bacteria from the anus and lower portion of the intestinal tract. Male enemas are often used prior to anal sex, if you are milking your prostate,  or other forms of anal play to ensure that no one gets into a messy situation while they go for backdoor play. There are different types of douches and enemas for men available which all work in slightly different ways. So, understanding what you want to use it for will help you determine which option is best suited to you.  If you are interested in douches and enemas, check out our ultimate guide on beginner anal play.

What is the difference between an anal douche and male enema?

Although they are two different items, the terms are often used interchangeably and mean pretty much the same thing to most people. However, if you want to get technical about it, here is the breakdown between them.

An anal douche is usually a handheld device consisting of some sort of bulb and stem that injects water into the lower part of the rectum and anal area.  This is done in order to flush out all bacteria and poop that may be left behind. This is enough to cleanse the area involved in most forms of backdoor anal play.

On the other hand, a male enema is designed to cleanse the entire anal track and injects water much further into the body. Originally, the term enema also referred to using an enema to insert a special laxative liquid into the body which helps you to go to the bathroom. People have been known to use natural enemas such as lemon juice or coffee but that is not always recommended.  Consult with your physician before using other compounds. Those are generally used for somebody about to get a colonoscopy or with constipation. If you do come across an enema that has the liquid with it, just empty that out down the drain and use some warm water in its place instead. This is all you need to cleanse the area prior to play.

How do they work?

Simply put, these sex tools forcibly inject water into the anal cavity in order to flush your rectum out.  Once you squeeze the anal douche bulb and expel all of the water, using the restroom immediately after will drain the water along with any residue, bacterial, or fecal matter that may be still in your body. It will get rid of traces of poop and bacteria too to leave you feeling fresh, clean and comfortable.  Not to mention safe for anal sex!

Why do people use douches and enemas?

People use this type of product to make sure they are completely clean before they indulge in any sort of anal play. While they are not required, most people find that using one can make them feel more comfortable while they penetrate their anus.  This is because they don’t need to worry about any feces (poop), smell or bacteria getting involved. We cannot recommend it enough, if you are looking to get into backdoor anal play, proper hygiene through the use of an anal douche is essential.  These are especially popular for those engaging in anal sex with a partner, but they can also be used prior to playing with a finger or sex toy.

It’s all about feeling comfortable while playing with an area that can be a bit intimidating for some.

What different types of douches and enemas are there?

There are a few different types available which work in slightly different ways. Here is a run-down of the three main types.

Anal Douche Bulb

An anal douche bulb has a bulb that gets filled with water and a hard tip or nozzle that carries the water into the body. You fill the bulb with water and slowly depress the bulb to move the water into the anus. This is a great option for beginners as it is extremely easy to use, and you can easily control the amount of water that goes is inserted.  Typically, these devices are made with medical-grade silicone bulbs as well as abs plastic or silicone nozzles.  The nozzle will usually have several small holes at the tip which allows the water to flow in different directions at the same time.

Enema Bag

This style uses gravity to get the water into the anus. You insert the tip into your body, just like you do with a bulb douche then hang the bag or bottle up higher than your body. The water will start to flow down through the long tube and into your body. This process uses a lot more water, takes a lot more time and goes much deeper into the body too. This type of product is suited to more intermediate or advanced users who know what they are doing already.

Shower Enema Attachment

This is an attachment that connects to your shower hose to become an enema. These are for advanced anal users only as they can be very strong depending on your water pressure. This gives a deeper and more intense clean to the area. For this reason, you should use this type of product with extra care, so you don’t overdo it.  Too much water pressure going up your butt and into your lower intestine can cause serious harm to your body.

Do I have to use an anal enema or douche?

Do you have to use an anal enema or douche? No.  Should you?  Yes. It is not required to use an enema or douche prior to anal play. So long as you have gone to the bathroom an hour or so before anal play and don’t feel like you need to go, then in most cases, you will be absolutely fine and healthy down there anyway. However, if you do feel concerned and want to ensure that everything is clean and hygienic, then you can use one to settle your nerves and help you to relax. Using a male douche is really as much about your mental state during sexual play as it is your physical state.

How to anal douche

 General tips for anal douching

  • Before you start, first sit on a toilet and go to the bathroom.
  • Always wash your hands and all the equipment.
  • Lukewarm water will make the douching more comfortable and pleasant.
  • To prevent damage to your anal area and rectum, keep water pressure lower
  • Do not rinse out your rectum with a laxative or soap.
  • Apply water-based lube in your ass and on the tip of the enema nozzle.
  • Relax your sphincter and push the nozzle gently a few centimeters inside.
  • Each time you rinse, let the water flow in slowly until your rectum feels full.
  • Then sit down on the toilet and relax your sphincter, letting the water flow out along with the shit.
  • Repeat this process a few times until the water that comes out is clean.

Anal Douche Bulb

  • Always clean your enemas with hot water, soap, and anti-bacterial sex toy cleaner before and after every use,
  • Fill the bulb up with luke-warm water. Make sure the water is not too hot. The temperature will feel warmer in your body then it will on your hand, so make sure you don’t go too warm, as you might find this uncomfortable or painful. (Each enema manufacturer recommends filling up their bulbs different, refer to the packaging for best use of your product)
  • Attach the nozzle to the bulb and cover the nozzle with some water-based lubricant.
  • Insert the nozzle very slowly into your rectum. Once inserted, you can start to compress the bulb to move the water through the nozzle into your body.
  • Be careful with your compress to ensure that you do not allow the douche to suck the water from inside your body back into the douche. This will make cleaning it afterward a lot more difficult. It is essential that you sterilize it or you may reintroduce bacteria into your body. If you are concerned about this, look out for a douche with a one-way valve which will prevent this from happening.
  • Once the bulb is completely depressed, remove the nozzle from your butt.
  • Hold the water inside for about 15 seconds or longer. Basically, hold until you feel like you need to go to the bathroom.
  • When you ready simply let it go into the toilet.
  • Repeat this process until the water you expel runs clear.

Enema Bag

  • Fill the bag with luke-warm water.
  • Get in a comfortable position and insert the lubricated nozzle into your rectum.
  • Now, you can either hang the bag up high above your body so that gravity will move the water down the tube, or you can lightly squeeze the bag to move the water down into your body.
  • When the bag is empty remove the nozzle from your body.
  • Now you can relax and let it do its work.
  • When you feel like you need to go to the bathroom, go to the toilet and allow the body to flush out the water into the toilet as usual.

Shower Enema

  • Attach the nozzle to your shower hose.
  • Apply a good amount of anal lubricant to the nozzle and insert it into your anus.
  • Slowly turn on the shower and allow water to flow into your body.
  • Hold the water inside your body until you feel ready to use the bathroom.
  • Release the water from your body.

Can I share my douche or enema with others?

Yes, that is fine so long as you have cleaned it and sterilized it first. Never share it without sterilizing it as this can spread infections. Share at your own risk in case they don’t clean before giving back.  We recommend getting a good anti-bacterial sex toy cleaner to make sure you kill all of the bad bacteria left on your device after use.

Are there any risks or side effects using an anal douche or enema?

Yes, there are, and for that reason, it is not recommended to use this type of product every time you partake in anal play.

Overuse of a douche or enema can reduce the number of good bacteria inside your body making you more susceptible to infections down the line. This is because flushing the body like this also flushes out healthy intestinal flora. The water can also cause tears or scrapes making you more susceptible to HIV or STIs. While it is ok to use these products every now and then, you should avoid using them more than once or twice a week.

Also, make sure you don’t ever use it after anal play! Douching after play is more likely to push, lubricant, sperm or pathogens further into the body rather than flush it out.

How do I clean my douche or enema?

You need to thoroughly clean the tools after using them to ensure that you remove all bacteria. You can do this in a few different ways, depending on what kind of material you are dealing with. However, most enema and douche materials are made from strong, body-safe materials like silicone, abs plastic or metal so most of these methods should be totally fine.

To clean your douche or enema, take all the pieces apart and use hot water and soap to clean them. Make sure you get into any nooks and crannies and give it a proper scrub. Then rinse it all thoroughly so that no soap residue is left over.

Depending on your materials, you can also place all the pieces in boiling water to sterilize and disinfect them. I would still give them a good scrub first. Boil for 3 – 5 minutes.

If you want to ensure they are super clean, you can use a bleach solution. Add 1-part bleach to 10 parts water and insert all the pieces. Let them sit in this solution for at least 1 minute and then rinse them thoroughly under water.
